One of our beautiful independent schools in Tunbridge Wells is seeking to appoint a Non-Residential Matron to work in the Senior Boarding House with pupils aged 14-18. The person appointed will assist the Housemistress and House Staff in providing care, guidance and support for the pupils and with the smooth running of the domestic side of the Boarding House.

They are looking for a person with energy and who is committed to the well being of young people; they will need to be empathetic, have a sense of humour, work well in a team and be able to deal calmly and efficiently with a variety of tasks. There is also a high degree of contact with parents and guardians, often via phone and email, and the Non-Residential Matron needs to have high levels of communication skills. The successful candidate will be supported with appropriate training.

This is a permanent post and the main duties are:

  • To contribute to ensuring that the Boarding House is a homely and inviting place to live.
  • To assist with boarders' morning and evening routines.
  • To assist with supervision of evening free time, homework and activities.
  • To work with the Housemistress and other House staff to ensure National Minimum Standards are met, or exceeded.
  • On occasion, the Matron may be deployed in other Boarding Houses on the campus.
  • Shifts will be a mixture of weekdays, evenings and weekends. This is to ensure the Matron gets to know the pupils in a range of settings and to share out tasks equably amongst the House team.
  • To help maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of the kitchens and other communal areas.
  • To carry out other domestic or administration tasks as instructed by the Housemistress, including the online purchase of groceries from the supermarket for the House.

Pastoral Care and Well being:

  • To communicate with the School Nurse in relation to the health and well being of the boarders.
  • To accompany pupils to medical appointments or hospital as required.
  • To promote high standards of health and hygiene.
  • To follow the safety and security procedures of all boarders at all times when in the care of the school.
  • To provide an empathetic presence in the Boarding House, dealing sensitively with those having difficulties or issues.
  • To encourage good manners, politeness and respect amongst boarders.
  • To develop in the boarders a sense of collective responsibility to support and help each other.
  • To communicate effectively
  • To support the school's Behaviour Policy, using encouragement and rewards, and escalating serious incidents to the Housemistress as appropriate.
  • To remain vigilant to any potential safeguarding or welfare issues and report these as necessary.

Skills and Experience:

  • Previous experience in a similar role or environment would be an advantage.
  • First aid qualification (training can be provided).
  • IT literate including with the use of email, Word and Excel to access school policies.
  • Strong organisational skills with effective communication skills in person and by phone.
  • Driver (desirable).
